Tour of the Norcem Mines

Tour of the Norcem Mines

There were many who found their way to Norcem’s mines. Mona Holte gave a fine presentation about what the world looked like when the limestones there were formed.

Norway lay south of the equator at that time, and the water was teeming with life. When the organisms died, they sank gently to the bottom, and accumulated over millions of years.Their shells formed a thick layer, which was eventually transformed to make the limestone we see today over the whole of Grenland.

There was also a fine presentation by Even Godejord down in the mines. Large portions of the mines lie under sea level, up to 300 meters under the sea. Totally, there are 23 miles (230 km) of passageways in the mines. It is an impressive sight. Large trucks could easily pass each other without hindrance!
